Santorini, 24 June - 1 July 2009
The Santorini
Conferences
The I.I.R. /
HBA Conference
The Institute
of International Relations (I.I.R.), affiliated
to Panteion University, Athens, in cooperation with
the Hellenic
Bank Association (HBA), is organizing from June
24 through 27, 2009, its Annual International Summer
Conference on the general topic: “The New
International Political Economy: From
Hegemonic to Cooperative Regimes?”.
Few issues ignite more acrimony in contemporary international affairs than that of the global economic crisis. Globalization, and associated issues of governance, has occupied a prominent place on the academic agenda for many years. Yet, the low political visibility of international financial issues and the fact that the regulation of global markets appeared to be a highly technical matter that was unintelligible to the layperson led global economic governance to be seen as a matter for technocratic-elite deliberation. However, the evolution of the recent market turmoil in the world’s main financial centers into a global recession, ignited the most far-reaching public debate ever concerning the future of globalization and global economic governance.
The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for critical engagement on central issues raised by the crisis and the ensuing international credit crunch. Key questions that participants will address include, but are not limited to:
- Trends in the Theory of Regime Change
- The Current Economic Crisis as a Symptom of Globalization
- Re-balancing the Global Economic Governance.
