This special issue, written by the EU Commissioner Mr. Christos Papoutsis, deals with the European challenges Greece is facing. According to Mr. Papoutsis, a democratic Europe and the consolidation of equal participation by all countries in the work of the EU institutions is a major objective. A second challenge is the establishment of EMU and the introduction of the Euro. Enlargement of the EU, its cost, and the Greek stance are examined as the third major challenge Greece has to address. Finally, the EU's international role and the prospects for the development of a real European Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) is discussed in this paper.
