This paper puts forward a Realist argument regarding the Yugoslav crisis. The theoretical framework for analyzing the Yugoslav case is the Realist critique of Liberal Idealism, in regard to which the author expands upon the arguments of Richard Betts on the unviability of collective security. The Yugoslav case is placed in the context of the Balkan balance of power, which is examined both historically and in its current form.
