Since the summer of 1992, the Institute of International Relations (IIR) of Panteion University of Athens has been organizing annually an International Summer Seminar on contemporary international affairs. The IIR Annual Summer Seminar has, thus far, brought together around 356 students from over 35 countries. Its overall purpose is to provide opportunities for the creation and consolidation of scholarly networks of cooperation by offering an international forum through which scholars exchange information on areas of common interest and disseminate research findings to advanced students.

Seminar Description
The events of 9/11 spurred an intense interest in terrorism which became immediately a core subject of political dialogue and academic debate. The then-coined term "new terrorism" came to dominate the security agenda on both sides of the Atlantic stimulating, at the same time, a substantial progress in terrorism studies. The seminar seeks to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in the study of terrorism, while also debate whether there is a significant continuity or transformation in terrorist behaviour. Topics that will be covered include: old vis-à-vis new terrorism, terrorism vis-à-vis other forms of political violence, the discourse of terrorism and the development of critical terrorism studies, the terrorism-democracy nexus, religious terrorism, the global war on terror and counterterrorism.
The faculty for the 2010 seminar includes:
Michael Boyle, Lecturer in International Relations and Research Fellow at the Centre for Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St. Andrews.
Andreas Gofas, Lecturer in International Relations, Panteion University; IIR Research Fellow.
